Adoption is normally a happy time for everyone. Most of the clients I work with are biological grandparents, stepparents and others who already have close relationships with the children in question and are looking to establish parental rights.
Whether you are seeking to adopt a relative, or the child of a person new in your life, you have options. An adoption can be closed so that the child never knows anything about his or her birth parents, or it can be open so that the birth parents can remain involved in the child's life.
Regardless of your adoption situation, the same process applies to all. It involves a social study and a criminal background check of the parents-to-be, as well as a genetic history report on the child. The child must also spend at least six months in the parental home before the adoption can be made final.
In Texas, there is no prohibition on adoption of a child by two parents of the same sex. The basic procedures are the same as for any other adoption; what matters is how involved you have been, over time, in the child's life.
